Reccopolis Archaeological Park
The site of the Reccopolis Archaeological Park is located in the municipality of Zorita de los Canes, in the province of Guadalajara. It forms part of a broader territory that includes several archaeological sites, among which Reccopolis itself stands out.
Nearby is the Interpretation Centre. Both spaces are open to visitors and have been equipped with a range of features designed to broaden access for individuals who previously faced barriers to visiting.
The archaeological site is a city founded ex novo by the Visigothic king Leovigild in honour of his son Reccared in AD 578. The planning of the city was a state-led project of great significance within the Visigothic Kingdom, reflecting similarities with Byzantine urban concepts. It stands as one of the first cities founded in the West during the Early Middle Ages.
Archaeological work carried out in recent years has revealed it as a major central urban complex, enclosed by a wall with forty-six towers, covering an area of thirty hectares, all constructed during the Visigothic period.
In addition, geomagnetic and ground-penetrating radar studies have confirmed the existence of occupation both inside and outside the walls, demonstrating that this was a widely built-up city, with large buildings and a complex urban layout. The archaeological record has shown that the city was continuously inhabited until the 9th century AD, and more sporadically until the 18th century.
